N
The
grapheme N (
minuscule:
n) is a letter in the
Czech,
Slovak and
Turkmen alphabets. It is formed from Latin
N with the addition of
hácek (cz)/mäkcen (sk) and follows plain N in the alphabet. N and n are at Unicode codepoints U+0147 and U+0148, respectively.
Ñ
Ñ (lower case
ñ,
International Phonetic Alphabet: "
énye") is a letter of the modern
Latin alphabet, formed by placing a
diacritical tilde on top of an
N. It became part of the
Spanish in the eighteenth century, when it was first formally defined. Subsequently it has been used in other alphabets, especially those influenced by the Spanish one:
Galician,
Asturian,
Basque,
old Aragonese (
Grafía de Uesca de 1987),
Chavacano,
Filipino,
Chamorro,
Guarani,
Quechua,
Mapudungun,
Mandinka, and
Tetum alphabets, as well as in Latin transliteration of
Tocharian and
Sanskrit, where it represents . It represents in
Crimean Tatar. In
Breton and in
Rohingya, it denotes
nasalization of the preceding vowel.
Cedilla
A
cedilla ( ; from
Spanish), also known as
cedilha (from Portuguese) or
cédille (from French), is a hook or tail ( ) added under certain letters as a
diacritical mark to modify their pronunciation. In
Catalan,
French, and
Portuguese, it is used only under the
c, and the entire letter is called respectively
c trencada (i.e. "broken C"), "c cédille", and "c cedilhado" (or "c cedilha", colloquially).

Hyperinteger
In
non-standard analysis, a
hyperinteger N is a
hyperreal number equal to its own integer part. A hyperinteger may be either finite or infinite. A finite hyperinteger is an ordinary integer. An example of an infinite hyperinteger is given by the class of the sequence (1,2,3,...) in the
ultrapower construction of the hyperreals.
Intersection (set theory)
In
mathematics, the
intersection A n
B of two
sets A and
B is the set that contains all elements of
A that also belong to
B (or equivalently, all elements of
B that also belong to
A), but no other elements.

The italicized letter
n is used in mathematics to denote an arbitrary number (usually an integer).
Nasal release
In
phonetics, a
nasal release is the release of a
stop consonant into a
nasal. Such sounds are transcribed in the
IPA with superscript nasal letters, for example as in English
catnip . In English words such as
sudden in which historically the tongue made separate contacts with the alveolar ridge for the /d/ and /n/, , many speakers today make only one contact. That is, the /d/ is released directly into the /n/: . Although this is a minor phonetic detail in English (in fact, it is commonly transcribed as having
no audible release: , ), nasal release is more important in some other languages.
Natural number
In
mathematics, the
natural numbers are those used for
counting (as in "there are
six coins on the table") and
ordering (as in "this is the
third largest city in the country"). In common language, words used for counting are "
cardinal numbers" and words used for ordering are "
ordinal numbers".
Newline
In
computing, a
newline, also known as a
line ending,
end of line (
EOL), or
line break, is a special
character or sequence of characters signifying the end of a
line of text and the start of a new line. The actual codes representing a newline vary across operating systems, which can be a problem when exchanging text files between systems with different newline representations.
Nigger
In the English language, the word "
nigger" is an
ethnic slur, usually directed at
black people. The word originated as a neutral term referring to people with black skin, as a variation of the Spanish and Portuguese noun
negro, a descendant of the
Latin adjective ("black"). It was often used disparagingly, and by the mid-twentieth century, particularly in the United States, its usage became unambiguously
pejorative, a racist insult. Accordingly, it began to disappear from popular culture, and its continued inclusion in classic works of literature has sparked controversy.
Shift Out and Shift In characters
Shift Out (SO) and
Shift In (SI) are
ASCII control characters 14 and 15, respectively (0x0E and 0x0F.) These are sometimes also called "Control-N" and "Control-O".
Thumbs signal
A
thumbs-up or
thumbs-down is a common
hand gesture achieved by a closed
fist held with the
thumb extended upward or downward in approval or disapproval, respectively. These gestures have become
metaphors in
English: "The audience gave the movie the thumbs-up" means that the audience approved of the movie, regardless of whether the gesture was actually made.
Velar nasal
The
velar nasal is a type of
consonantal sound, used in some
spoken languages. It is the sound of
ng in English
sing. The symbol in the
International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is , and the equivalent
X-SAMPA symbol is
N. The IPA symbol is similar to , the symbol for the
retroflex nasal, which has a rightward-pointing hook extending from the bottom of the right stem, and to , the symbol for the
palatal nasal, which has a leftward-pointing hook extending from the bottom of the left stem. Both the IPA symbol and the sound are commonly called '
eng' or 'engma'.
