מוות הוא מצב שבו גוף חי חדל לחיות, כלומר חדל לשמר את הסביבה הפנימית שמאפיינת אותו, והופך לגופה. העובדה שאין הגדרה חד-משמעית למושג "חיים" או גוף-חי (אורגניזם) מקשה על הגדרת המושג "מוות". עם זאת, אפשר להגדיר תהליכים מסוימים שמאפיינים יצורים חיים, ואשר הפסקתם מוגדרת לפיכך כ"מוות".
