הממלכה המאוחדת

הממלכה המאוחדת של בריטניה הגדולה וצפון אירלנד (באנגלית: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) היא מדינה השוכנת באיים הבריטיים, לא הרחק מחופיה המערביים של יבשת אירופה, מול צרפת. הממלכה המאוחדת היא הציר המרכזי של 54 מדינות חבר העמים הבריטי, שבראשן עומדת המלכה אליזבת השנייה, המכהנת מאז 1952. כמו במונרכיות אחרות באירופה בימינו, סמכותה של המלכה מצומצמת ביותר, ותפקידה בעיקרו טקסי, אם כי (בניגוד ליתר המונרכיות החוקתיות) בממלכה המאוחדת כל מוסדות השלטון עדיין כפופים להלכה למלכה.

הממלכה המאוחדת היא המדינה ה-22 בגודלה מבחינת אוכלוסייה, עם אוכלוסייה המוערכת בכ-64.5 מיליון תושבים. היא מונרכיה חוקתית עם מערכת דמוקרטית פרלמנטרית של שלטון. בירתה היא לונדון, עיר גלובלית חשובה ומרכז כלכלי עם אוכלוסייה אורבנית של 10,310,000 תושבים, והיא הרביעית בגודלה באירופה והשנייה בגודלה ב. המדינה מורכבת מארבע אומות (המכונות אומות הבית, באנגלית: Home Nations) שבעבר התקיימו כמדינות נפרדות: אנגליה, ויילס, סקוטלנד וצפון אירלנד. בעבר אירלנד הייתה חלק מהממלכה אך היא פרשה מהאיחוד בשנת 1921 ולממלכה המאוחדת נותרה צפון אירלנד, שמהווה שישית בלבד מהאי האירי.
