האוקיינוס השקט

האוקיינוס השקט הוא האוקיינוס הגדול ביותר בכדור הארץ והוא מכסה כשליש משטחו (32.4%), 165.2 מיליון קמ"ר. שטח זה גדול משטח כל היבשות שעל פני כדור הארץ, ששטחן ביחד כ-149 מיליון קמ"ר. בנוסף, הוא מכיל 46% מכמות המים החופשיים שעל פני כדור הארץ. גבולותיו הם: יבשת אמריקה במזרח, אסיה ואוסטרליה במערב. בצפון מפריד מצר ברינג בין האוקיינוס השקט לאוקיינוס הקרח הצפוני. דרום האוקיינוס השקט גובל באנטארקטיקה; קיימת גם הצעה להגדיר את הימים לחופי אנטארקטיקה בתור האוקיינוס הדרומי, ואם ההצעה תתקבל, זה יהיה הגבול הדרומי של האוקיינוס השקט, אולם אין לכך עדיין הסכמה.

האוקיינוס משתרע לאורך 15,500 ק"מ מים ברינג באזור הארקטי שבצפון עד לשוליים הקפואים של ים רוס באנטארקטיקה שבדרום. רוחבו המקסימלי של האוקיינוס השקט הוא 19,800 ק"מ מאינדונזיה ועד לחופה של קולומביה קרוב לקו הרוחב 5º צפון. מקובל להציב את גבולו המערבי של האוקיינוס במצר מלאקה. באוקיינוס השקט נמצא המקום הנמוך ביותר בקרום כדור הארץ - שקע מאריאנה, שעומקו 11,022 מטר מתחת לפני הים.

25,000 איים מצויים באוקיינוס השקט, יותר מאשר בכל שאר האוקיינוסים גם יחד, ורובם מצויים דרומית לקו המשווה (ראו רשימת איים באוקיינוס השקט).
