לרבות מהדתות יש כתבי קודש משלהן, המהווים טקסט יסוד לדת, ופעמים רבות מיוחסת כתיבתם לכוח עליון (אלוהים), שהכתיב את כתבי הקודש לנביאו. התהליך שבו אוסף כתבים הופך למקודש ומחייב, כאשר אין לשנות בהם דבר, מכונה קאנוניזציה. לעתים מלווה את הכתבים תורה שבעל פה, דהיינו פרשנות העוברת במסורת אוראלית. גם התורה שבעל פה הופכת לעתים לכתובה, ואף היא זוכה לעתים למעין קידוש וקאנוניזציה.
