Ancient Greek word (
philosophia) was probably coined by
Pythagoras and literally means "love of wisdom" or "friend of wisdom". Philosophy has been divided into many sub-fields. It has been divided chronologically (e.g.,

metaphysics,
ethics, and
aesthetics); and by style (e.g.,
