Mezcal, or
mescal, is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the
maguey plant (a form of
agave,
Agave americana) native to
Mexico. The word
mezcal comes from
Nahuatl mexcalli metl and
ixcalli which means "oven-cooked agave".
