חומר גלם הוא חומר המשמש לייצורם של מוצרים. מקורם של חומרי הגלם העיקריים הוא בטבע:

• היסודות לסוגיהם, בהם מחצבים כגון ברזל, נחושת ומתכות נוספות, יסודות המופקים מהאוויר, כגון חנקן, ויסודות המופקים מהים.
• אוצרות טבע כגון פחם, נפט, גז טבעי ומינרלים למיניהם.
• חומרים מן הצומח כגון עץ וכותנה.
• חומרים מן החי כגון צמר ועור.

קודם לניצולם של חומרי הגלם לייצורם של מוצרים מוגמרים, הם עוברים בדרך כלל תהליך עיבוד, לעתים כזה המשנה את טיבם אך במעט, ולעתים כזה היוצר שינוי ניכר. בהתאם לכך ניתן להבחין בין חומר גלם גולמי, כלומר בצורה שבה נלקח מהטבע, באמצעות כרייה, שאיבה, חציבה, קטיף וכדומה, וחומר גלם מעובד, שכבר שכבר עובד בידי האדם, אך טרם הפך למוצר מוגמר.

דוגמאות:

• קמח הוא חומר גלם המשמש לייצור לחם, עוגות ומגוון רחב נוסף של מוצרי מזון. הקמח מיוצר בטחנות קמח, באמצעות טחינה של גרגרי חיטה, שיפון וכדומה.
• בד הוא חומר גלם לתעשיית הביגוד, והוא נוצר כתוצאה מעיבוד נרחב של כותנה, צמר או חומרי גלם אחרים מסוג זה.
