השערה או היפותזה במדע היא מתן הסבר אפשרי כלשהו לתופעה בטבע או בחברה שטרם ניתן לה אישוש מספק. העלאת השערה היא הצעד הראשון בכל חקר מדעי. השערות הן חלק מרכזי בהתפתחות המדע ומופיעות בענפי מדע שונים:

• מדעי הטבע: ההשערה עוסקת בהסבר לתופעת טבע מסוימת, ואישושה או הפרכתה מתבצעים בשיטות המחקר המקובלות במדעי הטבע, ובפרט ניסוי.
• מדעי החברה: ההשערה עוסקת בהסבר לתופעה חברתית כלשהי, ואישושה או הפרכתה מתבצעים בשיטות המחקר המקובלות במדעי החברה.
• היסטוריה: ההשערה עוסקת בהסבר לתופעה היסטורית כלשהי, ואישושה או הפרכתה מתבצעים בשיטות המקובלות בחקר ההיסטוריה, כגון מחקר ארכאולוגי, איתור מסמכים העוסקים בהשערה וכדומה.
