גתיט

גֶתיט הוא מינרל של תחמוצת הברזל הקרוי על שם הסופר, המחזאי והוגה הדעות הגרמני יוהאן וולפגנג פון גתה שהתעניין גם במינרלים. הגתיט הוא מינרל המוכר מהתקופה הפרהיסטורית כששימש כפיגמנט. עדויות לשימוש בו מתקופה זו נמצאו בדגימה של פיגמנטים של צבע שנלקחו ממערת לאסקו בצרפת. אחד מסוגי הפיגמנט הטבעי המכונה אוכרה, ליתר דיוק "אוכרה חומה", הוא בעצם גתיט. המינרל תואר וקיבל את שמו לראשונה ב-1806 כשאותרו מופעים שלו באזור רכס מסבי (Mesabi Range) שבמינסוטה, האזור העשיר ביותר בעפרות ברזל בארצות הברית.

הגתיט הוא תחמוצת ברזל-הידרוקסיד שנוסחתו FeOOH. לעתים הוא מופיע כגבישים פריזמטיים בצורת מחטים, אך לרוב הוא מופיע כגוש חסר צורה. הגתיט הוא מינרל הברזל הנפוץ ביותר אחרי המטיט והשימוש העיקרי בו כיום הוא כמחצב ברזל והוא מכונה "עפרת ברזל חום", אם כי יש המשתמשים בו כפיגמנט טבעי. אספני הקריסטלים נוהגים לקנות דגימות מיוחדות של הגתיט שבהם הגביש דמוי המחט זוהר לעתים בשלל צבעים. במקרים רבים מהווה הגתיט מסת־אם למינרלים אחרים כדוגמת הונדיט האדום והשילוב יוצר דגימה מושכת לעין.

הגתיט נוצר בדרך כלל כתוצר לוואי של בליה של מינרלים עתירי ברזל אחרים ולכן הוא רכיב נפוץ בקרקעות. הגתיט יכול להיות מופץ על ידי מי תהום או בתנאים אחרים בהם מתהווים סלעי משקע, או שהוא נוצר כמינרל העיקרי במרבץ הידרותרמי. גתיט נפוץ בכל כדור הארץ, בדרך כלל בצורת גושים, במבנה דמוי נטיפים, כאואוליטים (מבנה הבנוי מכדוריות קטנות שנדבקו יחד), בערמה בצורת כליות או בגוש דמוי אשכול ענבים.

Goethite

Goethite (FeO(OH)), ( ) named after the German polymath and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832), an iron bearing hydroxide mineral of the diaspore group, is found in soil and other low-temperature environments. Goethite has been well known since ancient times for its use as a pigment (brown ochre). Evidence has been found of its use in paint pigment samples taken from the caves of Lascaux in France. It was first described in 1806 for occurrences in the Hollertszug Mine, Dermbach, Herdorf, Siegerland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
