האימפריה הפרתית הייתה המעצמה השלטת באזור שבו שוכנת כיום איראן, מאמצע המאה ה-3 לפנה"ס. בהדרגה השתלטה על מסופוטמיה (עיראק של ימינו) בין 190 לפנה"ס ל-224 לספירה, והפכה לאויבתה המרה של האימפריה הרומית, בכך שהגבילה את השתלטותה מזרחה אל מעבר לקפדוקיה (היא מרכז טורקיה של ימינו).
