אזובית

אזובית (שם מדעי Origanum) הוא סוג הכולל כ-20 מינים במשפחת השפתניים. מקור השם הלטיני של הצמח, אוריגנום, הוא ביוונית. המילה "אורוס" ביוונית פירושה הוא הר ו"גנוס" פירושה שמחה, כלומר "שמחת ההר". מקורו של הסוג באגן הים התיכון ומשתייכים אליו גם צמחי התבלין החשובים הבאים:

בעבר היו המינים אזוב תרבותי ואזוב מצוי שייכים לסוג Majorana, אולם לפי הסיסטמטיקה החדשה שערך הבוטניקאי Jan H. Ietswaart בשנת 1980 , נכלל Majorana בסוג אזובית. מיני סוג זה מכוסים שערות בלוטיות, ועליהם יושבים. הגביע דמוי פעמון, מעורק. מבנה הפרח אופייני למשפחה.

אזובית, סוג צמח תבלין (אורגנו) במשפחת השפתניים, המונה כ-20 מינים. שלושת המינים הגדלים בארץ ישראל הם בני-שיח נמוכים, אשר לעליהם ריח חריף בשל השמנים האתריים המצויים בהם. הם גדלים בסלעים ופורחים בעונת הקיץ.
