הרפובליקה האסלאמית של איראן (בפרסית: جمهوری اسلامی ايران, ג'וֹמְהוּרִי-יֶה אֶסְלַאמִי-יֶה אִירַאן; ) היא רפובליקה אסלאמית-שיעית בעלת מיעוט סוני הנמצאת במערב אסיה, והיא כיום בעלת משטר תיאוקרטי. היא גובלת באפגניסטן ובפקיסטן במזרח, בטורקמניסטן בצפון-מזרח, בארמניה ובאזרבייג'ן בצפון-מערב, בעיראק ובטורקיה במערב. למדינה קו חוף עם הים הכספי בצפון, ועם המפרץ הפרסי יחד עם מפרץ עומאן בדרום.

לאיראן היסטוריה ארוכה. האימפריה הפרסית שהוקמה על ידי כורש בשנת 550 לפני הספירה הייתה האימפריה הראשונה בתולדות העולם. עד 1935 נקראה איראן בשם פרס וזאת, ככל הנראה, על שם מחוז פארס, המחוז הדרומי באיראן. השם "איראן" מקורו עוד באימפריה הסאסאנית. באותה השנה נכנס המונח לשימוש בינלאומי.

It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and an Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has long been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia, and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.
