(ש"ע) רוסיה (שם מדינה במזרח אירופה)

הפדרציה הרוסית (ברוסית: Российская Федерация, תעתיק פונטי מדויק: רַאסִייְסְקַאיָה פֶדֶרַאצְיָה) היא המדינה בעלת השטח הגדול בעולם. שטחה של רוסיה עולה על 17 מיליון קילומטרים רבועים, מתוכם כ-13 מיליון קמ"ר באסיה וכ-4 מיליון קמ"ר באירופה. רוסיה חולקת גבול משותף עם נורווגיה, פינלנד, אסטוניה, לטביה, ליטא, פולין, בלארוס, אוקראינה, גאורגיה, אזרבייג'ן, קזחסטן, הרפובליקה העממית של סין, מונגוליה וקוריאה הצפונית.

רוסיה נהפכה למדינה נפרדת עם התפרקות ברית המועצות בשנת 1991. תחת השלטון הסובייטי היא נקראה "הרפובליקה הסובייטית הפדרטיבית הסוציאליסטית הרוסית" (РСФСР, Российская Советская Федеративная Социалистическая Республика) ועם הקמתה נהפכה לפדרציה. רוב שטחה, אוכלוסייתה ותעשייתה של ברית המועצות, אחת משתי מעצמות העל דאז, היו ברוסיה. כתוצאה מכך, מאז פירוק ברית המועצות ירשה רוסיה את המושב הקבוע במועצת הביטחון, וכמו כן מבקשת לרשת את מקומה של ברית המועצות כמעצמה חשובה, ורואה את עצמה במובנים רבים כממשיכת דרכה.
