gaisbock's syndrome
****** HELP ******(Relative or 'stress' polycythaemia)This condition was origionally thought to be stress-induced. The red cell volume is normal but, as a result of decreased plasma volume there is relative polycythaemia. 'Stress' polycythaemia is more common than polycythaemia vera and occurs in middle-aged men, particularly in smokers who are obese and hypertensive. The condition may present with cardiovascular problems such as myocardial or cerebral ischaemia. For this reason, it may be justifiable to venesect the patient. Smoking should be stopped.
