ozone
n.
form of oxygen having three atoms in its molecule that is a result of electrical discharge in oxygen and is found in small quantities in the atmosphere (especially after a thunderstorm) and forms a protective layer in the upper atmosphere
Ozone
Ozone (systematically named
1λ1,3λ1-trioxidane and
catena-trioxygen), or
trioxygen, is an inorganic molecule with the
chemical formula . It is a pale blue gas with a distinctively pungent smell. It is an
allotrope of
oxygen that is much less stable than the
diatomic allotrope , breaking down in the lower atmosphere to normal
dioxygen. Ozone is formed from dioxygen by the action of
ultraviolet light and also atmospheric electrical discharges, and is present in low concentrations throughout the
Earth's atmosphere (stratosphere). In total, ozone makes up only of the atmosphere.
ozone
Noun
1. a colorless gas (O3) soluble in alkalis and cold water; a strong oxidizing agent; can be produced by electric discharge in oxygen or by the action of ultraviolet radiation on oxygen in the stratosphere (where it acts as a screen for ultraviolet radiation)
(hypernym) gas
(substance-meronym) oxygen, O, atomic number 8
