נקרא גם דפנה, עץ דפנה. שיח המשמש במאגיה וברפואה העממית. בפולקלור נקשר שמו עם תהילת נצחון. במיתולוגיה היוונית דפנה היא בתו של אל הנהר פנאוס, שנמלטה מחיזוריו של אל השמש אפולו. אביה סייע לה במנוסתה והפך אותה לשיח הדפנה. לכן מקודש שיח הדפנה לאפולו.
