מופנמות - מוחצנות

בפסיכולוגיה, נחשב ממד המופנמות - מוחצנות לאחד מהממדים המרכזיים המאפיינים את האישיות ותאוריות תכונות רבות מתבססות עליו. כבר בגיל צעיר, ודאי שעם הכניסה לבית הספר, מורגשת חשיבותו הרבה של ממד זה בחייו של האדם היכול להשפיע במידה רבה על התנהגותו, גישתו לבעיות ונושאים שונים, סדרי עדיפויותיו, עיסוקיו ועוד.

האדם המופנם מפנה את האנרגיות שלו כלפי עצמו בעוד שהמוחצן מפנה אותן כלפי החברה. המופנם הוא מהורהר, זהיר, שקט. המוחצן הוא פטפטן, מלא חיים ואימפולסיבי. בעוד שצעיר מופנם יבלה את זמנו בחדר עם ספרים או מחשב, חברו המוחצן יעדיף מסיבות ופאבים. לא בהכרח משתייך אדם לאחד הקטבים, ויש שימצאו עצמם בעמדת ביניים בממד המופנמות - מוחצנות.

את הממד הגדיר קרל יונג, וזו אחת מתרומותיו החשובות ביותר לפסיכולוגיה, אחת מהפחות שנויות במחלוקת וכזו שעמדה במבחנים אמפיריים רבים. על פי תאוריית חמש התכונות הגדולות, המיקום בסולם המופנמות - מוחצנות הוא אחד מחמש התכונות המרכזיות המגדירות את האישיות.

Extraversion and introversion
The trait of extraversion–introversion is a central dimension of human personality theories. The terms introversion and extraversion were popularized by Carl Jung, although both the popular understanding and psychological usage differ from his original intent. Extraversion tends to be manifested in outgoing, talkative, energetic behavior, whereas introversion is manifested in more reserved and solitary behavior. Virtually all comprehensive models of personality include these concepts in various forms. Examples include the Big Five model, Jung's analytical psychology, Hans Eysenck's three-factor model, Raymond Cattell's 16 personality factors, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator.
