הידרולוגיה

הידרולוגיה הוא מדע העוסק במים שאינם באוקיינוסים (אוקיינוגרפיה הוא התחום המדעי העוסק במים אלו) ואינם באטמוספירה (מדעי האטמוספירה הוא התחום המדעי העוסק במים אלו). תחום זה כולל את מי התהום ואת המים שעל פני היבשות - נהרות, אגמים, שטפונות, ניקוז, תעלות וכיוצא בזה. אחת המשימות הקשות ביותר בהידרולוגיה היא מחקר מי התהום. זאת משום שכמעט כל דבר הקשור במי התהום הוא קשה לתצפית ולמדידה.

מקור המונח "הידרולוגיה" מיוונית עתיקה, ומהווה צירוף של המילים "ὕδωρ" (הידרו), שפירושו מים, ו"λόγος" (לוגיה), שפירושו תורה (הידרולוגיה = תורת המים).
