haemolytic uraemic syndrome
****** HELP ******HUS is characterized by
intravascular haemolysis with red cell fregmentation(microangiopathic haemolysis),
thrombocytopenia and
acute renal failure. The syndrome often follows a fibrile illness, particularly gastroenteritis or uper respiratory tract infection.A few particular strains of pathogenic E coli notably strain O157,have been isolated in many cases and in outbreaks of the disease. It has been suggested that infection triggers endothelial damage and that derangements of haemostatic coagulation system then occur in susceptable individuals. Recurrent episodes of HUS have been discribed in the same individual, and familial forms of the disease(with both recessive and dominant inheritance) exist.
