מצפן הוא מכשיר לקביעת הצפון ולמדידת זוויות במשור האופק (כלומר, מדידת כיוון הרכיב האופקי של השדה המגנטי של כדור הארץ) לצורך ניווט, באמצעות השדה המגנטי של כדור הארץ. באמצעות המצפן יכלו נווטים לנווט את מסעותיהם לכיוון הרצוי, במיוחד ספנים ויורדי ים, שהכיוון היה הדבר העיקרי שיכל להנחות אותם במרחבי האוקיינוסים.

המצפן מצביע בקירוב רב אל כיוון הקטבים המגנטיים, שמיקומם שונה מאשר הקטבים הגאוגרפיים.
