BLOB

במסדי נתונים, BLOB (קיצור של Binary Large OBject ובתרגום מילולי לעברית: עצם בינארי גדול), הוא טיפוס נתונים המייצג רצף ארוך של מידע בינארי המאוחסן במסד נתונים כיישות אחת. BLOB מייצג בדרך כלל קובץ תמונה, קובץ שמע או כל אלמנט מולטימדיה אחר שנשמר במסד הנתונים. לעתים ה-BLOB מהווה קובץ הרצה בשפת מכונה שניתן לשלוף מהמסד ולהריץ אותו. לא כל מסדי הנתונים תומכים בשמירה של BLOB-ים.

במונח BLOB נעשה לראשונה שימוש במסד הנתונים Informix, ובראשיתו בכלל שימש לתיאור העברת מידע בנפחים גדולים ממסד אחד לאחר בלי שימוש במסננים או בתיקון שגיאות בדרך. באמצעות העברה כזו ניתן היה להאיץ את תהליך ההעברה. המונח אף שימש בפועל בשפה האנגלית לתיאור העברות מאסיביות מסוג זה.
