An
actor (or
actress for female) is one who portrays a
character in a performance. The actor performs "in the flesh" in the traditional medium of the
theatre, and/or in modern mediums such as
film,
radio, and
television. The analogous Greek term is
(hypokrites), literally "one who interprets". The actor's interpretation of their role pertains to the role played, whether based on a real person or fictional character. Interpretation occurs even when the actor is "playing themselves", as in some forms of experimental
performance art, or, more commonly; to act, is to create, a character in performance.
