****** HELP ******This important thiamin-responsive syndrome associated typically with chronic alcohol abuse is an acute or gradual encephalopathy. The typical triad coprises:
*occular signs*Ataxia*Confusional states.But the condition occurs in partial forms.
It is due to ischaemic damage to the brainstem and its connectios owing to thiamine deficiency,alcohol or other causes such as anorexia nervosa.
Occular signs:*Nystagmus
*Bilateral rectus palsies
*Cojugate gaze palsies
*Fixed pupils
*Papilloedema (rarely)
Ataxia:*Broad-based gate
*cerebellar signs
*Vestibular paralysis (absent response to caloric stimulation)
Confusion:*Apathy
*decreased awareness or restlessness
*An amnestic syndrome
*Stupor and coma
Hypothermia and Hypotensiondue to hypothalamic damage.
