ארצות הברית

ארצות הברית של אמריקה (באנגלית: United States of America, או בראשי תיבות: USA, בתרגום מילולי לעברית: "המדינות המאוחדות של אמריקה") היא פדרציה ורפובליקה-חוקתית המורכבת מ-50 מדינות וממחוז פדרלי. המדינה שוכנת ברוּבָּה במרכז יבשת אמריקה הצפונית, שבה נמצאות 48 מהמדינות וכן מחוז קולומביה שבו נמצאת העיר וושינגטון, בירת המדינה. ארצות הברית גובלת בקנדה בצפון ובמקסיקו בדרום. מדינת אלסקה שוכנת בצפון-מערב היבשת, קנדה נמצאת מזרחית לה ורוסיה נמצאת בצד מערב, מעבר למצר ברינג. המדינה ה-50 היא הוואי, ארכיפלג השוכן באוקיינוס השקט.

שטחה של ארצות הברית הוא 9.83 מיליון קמ"ר, ואוכלוסייתה, נכון ל-23 בינואר 2016, מונה כ-322,875,000 תושבים. ארצות הברית היא אחת מהמדינות המגוונות ביותר מבחינה אתנית, כתוצאה מהגירה רחבת היקף ממדינות רבות. כלכלת ארצות הברית היא הכלכלה הלאומית הגדולה ביותר בעולם, והתוצר המקומי הגולמי שלה היה למעלה מ-17.5 טריליון דולר בשנת 2014.

ארצות הברית נוסדה על ידי שלוש עשרה המושבות של בריטניה הגדולה שהוקמו לאורך חוף האוקיינוס האטלנטי. המושבות הכריזו על עצמאותן ב-4 ביולי 1776. המרד אורגן על ידי הקונגרס הקונטיננטלי ובמסגרתו הצליחו המושבות לנצח את בריטניה הגדולה במסגרת מלחמת העצמאות של ארצות הברית, שהייתה למלחמת העצמאות הקולוניאלית המוצלחת הראשונה. לאחר תקופה קצרה שבה תקנון הקונפדרציה היה המסמך שלפיו התנהלה המדינה נכנס לתוקף ב-17 בספטמבר 1787 מסמך שלפיו הוקמה ממשלה מרכזית חדשה – חוקת ארצות הברית. מגילת הזכויות, שכללה עשרה תיקונים לחוקה, אושררה ב-1791.

"U-S-A!" is a chant of the United States of America's initials popular in supporting American national sports teams. The chant was documented at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, during the basketball tournament final between the United States and the Soviet Union, but was popularized after being yelled by fans during the 1980 Winter Olympics, held in Lake Placid, New York, where the U.S. men's ice hockey team defeated the Soviet Union in what became known as the "Miracle on Ice", later moving on to beat Finland for the gold medal. The origin of the cheer is unknown, although there are reports which pre-date the 1972 Olympics. It was chanted during the finals of the 1500 meter event and the long jump at the 1936 Summer Olympics and can be heard in Leni Riefenstahl's Festival of Nations documentary.
