TCP/IP

TCP/IP היא חבילת פרוטוקולי תקשורת שעליה מושתתת רשת האינטרנט, ושם למודל שכבתי המתאר תקשורת ברשתות מחשבים. חבילת פרוטוקולים זו ידועה בעיקר כמודל 4 השכבות, על ארבע השכבות שיש בה, אך נהוג להתייחס אלייה בין היתר כאל מודל 4\5 השכבות. הבחנה זו נובעת בעקבות ההסתכלות על שכבת הקשר כשתי שכבות שונות, אחת הנועדה לקשר באופן פיזי בין חולייה ברשת לחולייה אלייה צריך למסור את המידע (link layer), ולשכבה שפיזית מבצעת את תמסורת הנתונים (physical layer)

Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol
פרוטוקול התקשורת הראשי המשמש להעברת ממסרים ומידע מכל סוג שהוא ברשת האינטרנט העולמית והאינטראנט הארגונית. פרוטוקול זה (לא רק הוא) מבוסס על הטכניקה של מיתוג (העברת נתונים) במנות: Packet switching. לפי שיטה זו, כל ממסר מחולק למנות בגודל קבוע שמועברות ברשת בנתיבים (מסלולים) שונים ובמקביל. באופן זה, מוגברת מהירות העברת הממסר והרשת בכללותה גם מנוצלת יותר טוב וגם אמינה יותר משום שהיא יכולה לתפקד גם חלקים ממנה מושבתים מסיבה זו או אחרת. ה-TCP פועל בשכבה הרביעית והוא מסוג Connection-Oriented. ה- IP פועל בשכבה השלישית והוא מסוג Connectionless. שמו המלא של פרוטוקול IP הוא: Internet Protocol Datagram.

    The Internet protocol suite is the computer networking model and set of communications protocols used on the Internet and similar computer networks. It is commonly known as TCP/IP, because its most important protocols, the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP) were the first networking protocols defined in this standard. It is occasionally known as the DoD model, because the development of the networking model was funded by DARPA, an agency of the United States Department of Defense.
