ספינקס הוא יצור מיתולוגי המתואר כשילוב של אריה עם ראש אדם, לפעמים מתואר כבעל כנפיים. הספינקס מתואר לראשונה בממלכה הקדומה במצרים העתיקה, אך הייתה לו השפעה על תרבות יוון העתיקה. מקור שמה של החיה: "ספינקס" - Σφιγξ ביוונית מקורו במילה σφιγγω, "ספינגו" שמשמעו "לחנוק".
