(ש"ע) מוניטין, שם; כבוד

מוניטין הוא הרושם הכללי שנוצר על אדם, בעיני אנשים אחרים, והוא החלק המוכר יותר מהתדמית. המוניטין נובעים כתוצאה ישירה מהתנהלותו של אדם והם מתוארים בקווים כלליים ותמציתיים – לפלוני יש מוניטין של פילנתרופ, לפלונית יש מוניטין של קשוחה ולשלישי יש מוניטין של מאהב מוצלח. המוניטין אינם בהכרח שיקוף נכון של המציאות, והם יכולים להישען גם על שמועות ורכילויות.

מוניטין מייחסים גם לחברה עסקית וגם לציבור מוגדר, למדינה, או תופעות אשר כולם יצרו לעצמם מוניטין עקב פעילותם. בדרך כלל מתייחסים למוניטין כדבר חיובי, אלא אם צוין אחרת. קשה לבנות מוניטין טוב, אך קל לאבד אותו, כדברי בנג'מין פרנקלין: "דרושים מעשים טובים רבים כדי לזכות במוניטין טוב, אך די במעשה רע אחד כדי לאבד אותו".
