אולמקים

האולמקים היו אומה קדומה שהתקיימה במרכז אמריקה בתקופה הטרום קולומביאנית, מסביבות 1500 לפנה"ס עד לשנת 400 לפנה"ס. האולמקים חיו באזור השפלה הטרופית של דרום-מרכז מקסיקו, בעיקר באזורים שמהווים היום את מדינת וראקרוס ומדינת טבסקו במצר היבשה טהואנטפק (Tehuantepec). השפעתם התרבותית הייתה נרחבת יותר, ויצירות אמנות של האולמקים נמצאו אפילו באל סלוודור.

כנראה היו האולמקים אלה שהמציאו את הטלאצ'טלי, משחקי הכדור הקדומים באמריקה המרכזית, הנפוצים בתרבויות שונות של האזור, ושימשו למטרות בידור ודת – ניתן לקבוע בוודאות שהם הראשונים שתיעדו משחקים כאלה.

The Olmec were the first major civilization in Mexico following a progressive development in Soconusco. They lived in the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico, in the present-day states of Veracruz and Tabasco. It has been speculated that Olmec derive in part from neighboring Mokaya and/or Mixe–Zoque.
