מקדוניה

רפובליקת מקדוניה (במקדונית: Република Македонија) היא מדינה השוכנת בדרום-מזרח אירופה, ללא מוצא לים, ואשר גובלת ביוון בדרום, באלבניה במערב, בסרביה ובקוסובו בצפון ובבולגריה במזרח. הרפובליקה קיבלה עצמאות ב-1991 בעקבות פירוק הרפובליקה הפדרלית הסוציאליסטית של יוגוסלביה. בארגונים בינלאומיים היא נקראת "הרפובליקה היוגוסלבית לשעבר של מקדוניה", ובשנת 1993 התקבלה לאו"ם בשם הזמני "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (נקרא לעתים בקיצור: FYROM).

השם מקדוניה הוא גם שמו של המחוז בצפון יוון הגובל ברפובליקה. המחוז היווני נקרא על-שם ממלכת מקדוניה העתיקה שהתקיימה מצפון ליוון, והתאחדה איתה בימי פיליפוס השני. גם רפובליקת מקדוניה ביקשה לאמץ סמלים הקשורים בממלכת מקדוניה העתיקה (כדוגמת שמש ורגינה), אולם מחאה חריפה מצד יוון הביאה לשינוי דגל הרפובליקה. יוון התנגדה לא רק לסמליה של הרפובליקה כי אם גם לשמה, ולפיכך מכונה הרפובליקה בארגונים בינלאומיים "הרפובליקה היוגוסלבית לשעבר של מקדוניה" (באנגלית: Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia - FYROM; בצרפתית: L'ex-république yougoslave de la Macédoine).

Background
International recognition of Macedonia's independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was delayed by Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols. Greece finally lifted its trade blockade in 1995 and the two countries agreed to normalize relations, although differences over Macedonia's name remain. The undetermined status of neighboring Kosovo, implementation of the Framework Agreement - which ended the 2001 ethnic Albanian armed insurgency - and a weak economy continue to be challenges for Macedonia.
