מקאו (במנדרינית: 澳门 - "אַװ-מֶן"\Aòmén, בפורטוגזית Macau) היא חצי אי לחופה הדרומי של סין, מערבית להונג קונג, המוגדרת "אזור מנהלי מיוחד" (בדומה להונג קונג) תחת השלטון הסיני, מעין אוטונומיה בתוך הרפובליקה העממית של סין. מקאו נמצאת כ-70 ק"מ דרום-מערבית להונג קונג. במקאו תוחלת החיים הגבוהה בעולם, העומדת על כ-84.36, נכון לשנת 2009. מקאו היא המדינה הצפופה בעולם עם כמעט 21,000 אנשים לק"מ רבוע (נכון ליולי 2014).

Macau (; ), also spelled Macao, officially known as the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a special administrative region on the southern coast of the People's Republic of China. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong, which is about 64 kilometers to the east, and it is also bordered by Guangdong of Mainland China to the north and the South China Sea to the east and south. With an estimated population of around 636,200 living in an area of 30.3 km2 (11.6 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.

Background
Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999. China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau, and that Macau will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years.
