Gematria – מילון אנגלי-אנגלי
gematria
n.
method of interpreting the Hebrew Scriptures using the numerical value of words
Gematria
Gematria (Greek: meaning
geometry) is an Assyro-Babylonian-Greek system of
code and
numerology later adopted into
Jewish culture that assigns
numerical value to a word or phrase in the belief that words or phrases with identical numerical values bear some relation to each other or bear some relation to the number itself as it may apply to nature, a person's age, the calendar year, or the like.
Gematria
Gematria [from Hebrew from Greek geometria cf Aramaic gematrya' geometry] A Qabbalistic system of interpreting the Bible, consisting in finding the numerical value of a word or words -- the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet each designating a number -- and then substituting another word whose numerical value is equivalent to the one under consideration. Another method is that of using arithmetical values of words and phrases for interpretation of scriptures. This method forms one of the keys of interpreting sacred scriptures, although a very minor one, and in the hands of one who is inexpert an almost useless method.
