the eleven members of the European Union (at the moment) who have decided to adopt a single currency from the beginning of 1999. It differentiates these countries from the other members of the Union, such as the UK, which haven't joined.

This is an unofficial nickname for what is officially called "the euro area" - also often referred to as "the euro zone"..This area consists of the EU member states that have adopted the euro as their currency. So far the countries involved are Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Finland.
