Eumolpus
Eumolpus was a legendary Thracian king who, according to Greek mythology, established the City of Eumolpias, also called Eumolpiada (present-day Plovdiv) around 1200 BC (or 1350 BC), naming it after himself. His name may derive from eumelus "sweet melody". He is also referred to as Evmpolp in Bulgarian and Russian, which may be more or less related to his original name. If there is any truth in this myth then Plovdiv is one of the oldest still functioning cities in Europe.

When Eumolpus was born, his mother Chione, afraid of her father, threw the baby inside the sea. Poseidon took care of his little boy and he brought him to the shore in Ethiopia. Poseidon's sister Benthesikyme reared him and later on she married him to one of her daughters. But Eumolpus was in love with the other one and Benthesikyme banished him to Thrace. From there he had to run away, because he was preparing some conspiracy against his king-protector Tegyrios. So, he came to Eleusis. The Homeric Hymn to Demeter informs us, that in Eleusis Eumolpos belonged to the chiefs among the people. Pausanias says, that Eumolpus performed the holy rites of two goddes...
