אלקטרון

אלקטרון (סימונו המדעי: -e) הוא חלקיק יסודי תת-אטומי. במבנה האטום הבסיסי, האלקטרונים מקיפים את גרעין האטום המכיל את הפרוטונים והנייטרוניםמטענו החשמלי של האלקטרון שלילי, ושווה בגודלו לזה של הפרוטוןמסת ההתמד שלו קטנה ביחס למסת הפרוטון או הנייטרון (יחס של 1:1836 בקירוב). האלקטרון נחשב לחלקיק יסודי (כלומר לא ידוע על קיומו של מבנה פנימי לאלקטרון), והוא מסווג על-פי תכונותיו לקבוצת חלקיקים תת-אטומיים הקרויה לפטונים. לאלקטרון יש ספין שערכו , ועל כן הוא פרמיון, כלומר - מציית לעקרון האיסור של פאולי.

מוליכות חשמלית במוצקים ובכללם במוליכים מתכתיים בהם ההולכה יעילה במיוחד, נעשית על ידי זרימת אלקטרונים. אלקטרונים בעלי קשר חלש לגרעין האטום המסוגלים לעבור מאטום לאטום בהשקעה קטנה יחסית של אנרגיה ועל כן לזרום בקלות יחסית דרך המוצק תחת השפעת מתח חשמלי, נקראים אלקטרונים חופשיים.
