האטרקטיביות של ההטבעה בקרב הצופים הפכה אותה למהלך פופלרי ביותר, עד כדי כך ששחקנים מעדיפים לעתים לבצע הטבעה מסוכבת (ולהסתכן בהחטאת הטבעת) מאשר להשיג שתי נקודות בטוחות בליי-אפ פשוט. תופעה זו היא במידה רבה, תולדה של התרחבות הסיקור הטלביזיוני של משחקי הכדורסל: שחקן יודע שע"י הטבעה וירטואוזית הוא מגדיל את סיכויו להכנס לתקציר המשחק או לפינת ה-"מהלכים הנבחרים של השבוע".
