כנען

כנען היה בתקופת הברונזה המאוחרת שמו של חבל ארץ שבהמשך נודע בעברית כארץ ישראל. במקרא זהו שמה העיקרי של הארץ בתורה ובספר יהושע, ולעתים הוא משמש להבחנה בין הגלעד ובין הארץ שממערב לירדן, שרק היא קרואה כנען. בארכאולוגיה של המזרח הקרוב הקדום השם נמצא כמעט אך ורק בממצאים מהתקופה בה הארץ נשלטה בידי הממלכה המצרית החדשה, כמחוז מצרי שזה היה שמו, עד לכיבושה בידי בני ישראל באזור ההר ועל ידי גויי הים במישור החוף, אשר דחקו בחלק מהארץ את האוכלוסייה הקודמת.

בתורה נזכרים שבעה עמים כיושבים בכנען: החיתי, הפריזי, החיווי, האמורי, הכנעני, הגרגשי, היבוסי. נזכרות גם קבוצות שישבו בה אך לא היו מעמי כנען כגון הרפאים, העווים ועוד. בספר שופטים, יבין מלך חצור מכונה "מלך כנען".
