Saronic Gulf, from
Athens.
Tradition derives the name from Aegina the mother of the hero
Aeacus, who was born on the island and became its king. During ancient times Aegina was a rival of Athens, the great sea power of the era.

[Greek] Aegina is the daughter of the river god Asopus. The girl was abducted Zeus, who carried her off to the island of Attica (in the Sardonic Gulf), which was later named after her. She gave birth to a son, called Aeacus, and he became the monarch of the island.
