(ש"ע) אבשלום, שם עברי; בנו של דוד המלך (תנכי)

במקרא, אַבְשָׁלוֹם היה בנו השלישי של דוד המלך. סיפורו מסופר בספר שמואל ב' פרקים י"ג-י"ט. אמו הייתה מעכה בת תלמי מלך גשור, ממלכה קטנה בגולן. אבשלום נולד בחברון עם תחילת מלכות דוד ביהודה והוא מתואר כגבר יפה תואר במיוחד, חכם וערמומי. חייו היו קצרים וסוערים. הוא הרג את אחיו למחצה אמנון לאחר שהלה אנס את אחותו תמר. לאחר חזרתו מגלות, ומשהוסרו שאר המתחרים על הכתר מדרכו, מרד בדוד והצליח לתפוס את השלטון. בקרב מכריע שנערך בין צבאות שני הצדדים הובס צבא המורדים ואבשלום הוצא להורג במצוות יואב בן צרויה.

סיפור חייו ומותו של אבשלום עורר עניין ומחלוקת בקרב חוקרי המקרא. מערכת היחסים המורכבת והאינטנסיבית של אבשלום עם אביו דוד, שסופם במרד ובגידה, הפכה את אבשלום לסמל לבן סורר שבא על עונשו. כפי שמסכם מדרש רבה: "כיוצא בו דוד שלא ייסר לאבשלום בנו ולא רידהו יצא לתרבות רעה ושכב עם נשי אביו וגרם לו לילך יחף והוא בוכה, והפיל כמה אלפים מישראל, וגרם לו דברים רעים שאין להם סוף". מאידך, הסיפור המקראי התמציתי מתאפיין בעמימות ואף ברב-משמעות, שבה נשמעים קולות אחדים בתיאור מעשיו של אבשלום. רב המשמעות פתחה פתח לפרשנותו של הסיפור על ידי פרשנים רבים במספר רבדים: פשט (המובן הראשוני של הכתוב), רמז (פרשנות), דרש (פרשנות מרחיבה) וסוד (מיסטיקה).

[Judaic] Absalom, Hebrew, "Father of Peace," was the third son of David and Maacha, the daughter of Talmai, King of Geshur. Absalom did not live up to the Hebrew meaning of his name since he stirred up a rebellion against his father after killing his half-brother Amnon, who had raped their sister Tamar. Absalom since became the perennial name for a rebellious child. After fleeing the royal court and with the army that he raised, Absalom established a military headquarters at Hebron. Knowing this, David left Jerusalem, a stratagem which forced Absalom to enter "the forest of Ephraim" east of the Jordan River. There with his military knowledge and skill David easily defeated his son. Against David's orders Absalom was killed by David's general, Joab, an act which caused the king to utter a cry which has become a classic expression of a father's grief: "Oh my son, Absalom, my son, my son, Absalom! To dream of Absalom, is significant of distressing incidents. You may unconsciously fall a victim to error, and penetrate some well beloved heart with keen anguish and pain over the committal of immoral actions and the outraging of innocence. No flower of purity will ever be too sacred for you to breathe a passionate breath upon. To dream of this, or any other disobedient character, is a warning against immoral tendencies. A father is warned by this dream to be careful of his children.
