Biomarker
A
biomarker, or
biological marker, generally refers to a measurable of some biological state or condition. The term is also occasionally used to refer to a substance the presence of which indicates the existence of a
living organism. Further,
life forms are known to shed unique chemicals, including
DNA, into the
environment as evidence of their presence in a particular location.
biomarker
A substance sometimes found in the blood, other body fluids, or tissues. A high level of biomarker may mean that a certain type of cancer is in the body. Examples of biomarkers include CA 125 (ovarian cancer), CA 15-3 (breast cancer), CEA (ovarian, lung, breast, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract cancers), and PSA (prostate cancer). Also called tumor marker.
Biomarker
An effect in a biological system. Measurements in the human body or its products. Some biomarkers, such as the levels of certain vitamins in blood serum, are used as indices of nutritional status. Others are used as indices of the risk or progression of disease.
