Portable Document Format

Portable Document Format (בראשי תיבות: PDF; בתרגום חופשי: תַּסְדִּיר מסמכים נייד) הוא פורמט חופשי אשר הומצא על ידי חברת אדובי מערכות וכיום מפותח על ידי ארגון התקינה הבינלאומי. מטרת הפורמט היא הצגה מדויקת של מסמכים ושאר תוכן ללא תלות בפלטפורמה. כמו כן, התפישה מאחורי פורמט ה־PDF היא של "דף וירטואלי" כך שמה שמוצג על המסך יתקבל בהדפסה בדיוק רב, שלא כפי שבמקרים רבים, בעיקר ב־HTML, בהם ישנן גרסאות נפרדות לתצוגה ולהדפסה.

יתרון נוסף ומשמעותי של פורמט PDF הוא היכולת לנעול מסמכים כך שאי אפשר יהיה לשנותם או להדפיסם ובכך יש שמירה על זכויות יוצרים ומניעת סילוף התכנים.

Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it. In 1991, Adobe Systems' co-founder John Warnock outlined a system called "Camelot" that developed into PDF.
