עיתון הוא כתב-עת היוצא לאור, בדרך כלל, בתדירות קבועה בדפוס, או באופן אלקטרוני  המכיל חדשות, מאמרים אינפומטיבים ופרסום. עיתון מודפס בדרך כלל על נייר זול יחסית. עיתונים המפורסמים באינטרנט נקראים עיתונים מקוונים או אתרי חדשות. עיתונים מתפרסמים בדרך כלל על בסיס יומי או שבועי, אך ישנם מגזינים המתפרסמים בפורמטים אחרים.

עיתונים מפרסמים בדרך כלל מאמרי חדשות וכתבות העוסקות בחדשות בינלאומיות וחדשות מקומיות. החדשות כוללות: אירועים פוליטיים ואישיים, עסקים וכלכלה, פשע, מזג אוויר קשה ואסונות טבע, בריאות ורפואה, מדע וטכנולוגיה, ספורט ובידור, חברה, אוכל ובישול, אומנות וכד'. עיתונים מסורתיים מכילים גם מאמרי מערכת וכן מאמרים של פובליציסטיים וטורים אישיים של כתבים.

מלבד חדשות, בעיתונים מפורסם חומר רב נוסף כגון, תחזית מזג אוויר, ביקורות וסקירות של אמנות (ספרות, קולנוע, תיאטרון, אדריכלות ואמנות) ושל שירותים מקומיים (מסעדות, חנויות ועוד).
