ל' היא האות השתים עשרה באלפבית העברי. שמה, למ"ד (לָמֶד), ממלמד הבקר, שתפקידו היה לזרז ולהמריץ את הבקר ללכת בכיוון מסוים. מכאן נגזר הפועל למד, שמשמעותו לימוד והתפתחות מעבר למה שהיה קיים עד כה.
